Diesel engine differences, Turbo vs. normally aspirated 700

Were there many (any?) changes made to the D24 motor for use with the turbo, vs the normally aspirated motor as used in my old 265 Diesel? -Diff. pistons, rings, valves, etc. for the higher heat load? Exhaust-blowdown cam?
Or was it sturdy enough to just hang a turbo on the configuration already in production?

I just bought an '86 765 TD to replace my slow, ratty, old '80 265 Diesel. When starting, the TD engine rattles for one second (before oil pressure gets up I suppose). Kinda scary rattle, to me, sounds like rod bearings. Warm it doesn't sound bad and goes pretty good, in a smoky way.

I'd like to refurbish my donor norm.asp. motor/smokescreen generator ('85 D24, 100k mi., still=ok I guess, except for vacuum pump knock [busted spring?], rings and valve stem seals) at my leisure, then swap it into the 765 over a weekend. Do I have to make a bunch of internal engine parts different to suit the turbo?


Also the a/trans shudders when just starting off, is worse with greater applications of power. Doesn't feel like a tight u-joint, the ones I've had only shook from 10 through to 25 mph or so. I'm assuming first gear clutch leaving town. Any thoughts? And is this that stinkin' ZF trans that gave so much trouble 15 years ago? (I haven't yet had a chance to drop trans pan, change fluid, etc. Fluid is darkening but isn't burnt.)
