Hello. New to this board. Check engine light came on this morning after some rough idling at start. RPM dropped to below 500. Full stall in slow traffic followed. Near the mechanic and he witnessed same behavior. Hunted for vacuum leaks and manipulated throttle. Pointed to a suspect cylindrical object on the driver's side of the engine below what I suspect is the throttle body (air bypass valve?). Condition seems to be associated with whether the cooling fan starts to run. Longer the car ran, the more infrequent the phenomenon. Perusing the board, I see references to cleaning throttle bodies; checking "o" rings at fuel injectors; fuel injection solder relay cracks; radio suppression relay failure; RPM sensor failure; and "checking" the air bypass valve. Car has 97,000 miles and is maintained on schedule. Any additional impressions? I am thoroughly impressed with all your fearless mechanical exploits. Alas, I barely have control of my opposing thumbs and will not be the guy who is going to be trying to fix this as it will go to shop Monday. New to this area and do not have supreme confidence in this general import mechanic. As I understand it, nearest dealer is about 45 miles away in Tacoma. Any recommendations for a Volvo specialist in Washington between Tacoma Narrows and Hood Canal? I am in Kingston. Bainbridge Island would also work. Suppose I could ferry to Edmonds area if shop is really good. Thanks. Tom.
