tranmission leak 200

A mechanic told me that I have a rear transmission leak and that the transmission needs to be pulled down and all the gaskets need to be replaced-about a $350 job. I have an 84 240gl with 133k , just bought used. Tranny doesnt leak enough to deplete the fluid ion the reservoir ot to leave puddles underneath car , just leaves a film on the tranny. How long can I go without repairing the problem? Is there a less expensive fix?

On another note , can anyone recommend an aftermarket cruise control system I can install in this car?
