Help, I'm hot !!! 700 1986

How does the fan clutch work, and what are the common
failures ? Mine appears not to be working properly. It does
not keep up with RPMs. What advantage do these fans have
versus the old fashioned ones that do not have clutches ?

Also, while on the subject of cooling, why do the temperature
gauges always stay in the middle indicating all is well, while
in actuality there is Vesuvius brewing under the hood.
They might as well put a picture of a temperature gauge
on the dash. It would serve identical purpuse. It does not
surprise me that 740 series Volvos are so prone to blown
head gaskets, and warped heads.

P.S. Considering getting a used Trabant…..not…
