Wipers will not shut off 200 1987

help me please i have an '87 240Dl sedan. after replacing the wiper motor (it was extremly slow) my wipers will not shut off. now they go the proper speed but the wiper arm in hte car to adjust the speed will not turn off the wipers. i tried for several minutes to get it into the spot but it will just not turn off. Please if you have any idea of why it will not shut off please help me out.

p.s. did your motor ever go real slooowww?
