transmission on it's way out at 130K???? 200

I just took my 93' 240 into my mechanic because it had some intermittant stalling problems and told him to change the transmission fluid and filter while he was at it since it has not been done since i've had the car (about a year)and i don't know when the previous owner had it done. Plus, it has been shifting a little late and a little rough. Anyway, my mechanic called and said they changed the fluid and found a lot of residue in the old fluid. He said the transmission was probably on its way out. He also said the tranny needed a rear mount. The car only has 130K miles on it. How long do these transmission usually last? Is this a bad sign?

I told my mechanic to do the rear mount, and he acted like he half way expected me to have them replace the transmission today. I figured I would at least wait until the transmission actually went out before I replaced it because I really haven't had much trouble with it. Is this a bad thing to wait?
