Capacitor on the coil??? 700 1986

I have been helping a friend with his 740. We had no spark and eventually verified the hall effect sensor was the root cause. After replacing the distributor we still had no spark. While cranking, I could see the voltage transitions on the low voltage side of the coil now, but no HV coming out. We ordered a new coil, installed it and still no spark. I unplugged a rectangular plastic component from the coil's low voltage side and the engine started right up. Looking through the potting material I can see a capacitor marked 220 uf. Does anyone know if this is original equipment? Is it there for any reason other than RFI supression? I have an '87 and an '88 with the same engine but neither has this box attached to the coil mounting bracket.

Thanks in advance,
Bruce Johnson
