Turbo questions 200 1983

So I got my car back from the shop which has butchered the poor little volvo. I estimate well over 1200 worth of interior damage was done - so the shop ate their entire bill, gave me the replaced parts for free and refunded my money which I paid to have the head worked done.

I have my car home but needless to say I'm not too happy at the butcher job they did to it.

They hacked my intake manifold off because two bolts did not properly line up, or something of that matter. REEEEEEEEAAAALLY stupid stuff like that. They also ran my car with the oil feed line for the turbo disconnected, which in turn over-heated the turbo and killed the unit.

So I need to replace it now. 603 bucks plus shipping for a brand new turbo Center cartridge, Garrett water cooled. Now as my turbo was only oil cooled before I need to buy this water cooling 'plumbing' kit as well. Anyway.

I figure 700 bucks to assure it's done right the first time is better than buying one for 175 bucks used and getting one which does not work.

according to this bonehead mechanic, he said the problem was that the turbo seals had blown and were allowing oil to be 'pumped' into the exaust manifold, thus causing the smoking under throttle. I'm a little doubtful however, that sound right? My car didn't smoke at all before I took it to this guy, compression is nice and even on all cylinders which makes me think an' ring problem is out of the question. I looked at the plugs, none of them had any traces of burning oil.

Anything special I need to know about the install process? And do I need to remove the exaust manifold from the engine? It looks like I can remove the turbo without pulling the exaust from the car.

Jeff
