AC/Vent 900 1994

I have a '94 960 wagon and have had trouble with the AC. I counted on trouble when I bought it used two years ago. The worst thing is that the air comming from the system has begun to smell very bad. I asked my mechanic if he could check to see if some animal had crawled in there, but he said (without checking) that it was mildew. He said to spray bleech into the recirculating vent with the system running. This doesn't sound good to me. Any tips on how to clean the system? I'm going to clean the condenser drain. The dash is so densly packed with equipment that I dread trying to pull it apart.
