How to clean gunk from inside of rims?

While browsing a local wrecking yard a few months back, I found a very nice set of Virgo 15" alloy wheels (mounted on a 240 diesel!) and bought all 4 for $100; perhaps the pricing was in how I asked..."How much for the wheels from that Volvo diesel?"...

It's now time to buy some new tires, but two of the wheels have some sort of deposit on them; I think at some time a tire sealing goop of some sort was used. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way of cleaning the stuff from the rim - preferred solvents / cleaners, etc.?
