Is noise from an M46 a bad sign? 200

I’m getting a fair amount of “gear noise” from my M46? My old 84’ turbo didn’t have any noticeable noise, but my “new” 84 GL’s M46 makes a noticeable amount of noise, especially when idling in neutral. When under power the noise from the tranny isn’t noticeable, but at idle I’d say it’s at least a quarter of the overall engine noise. When idling with the clutch in it goes silent.

Is this a sign of impending doom, or just a sign it’s time to change the M46’s oil? Is there a particular bearing that wears often and makes this noise?

Thanks in advance!
