voltage regulator & alternator in 740 700 1990

I have conflicting reports from two different mechanics in regards to the location of the voltage regulator on my 1990 740 GLE 16-valve. One mechanic states it is separate from the alternator, while the other says it is built into the alternator. Which is it? Also, can anyone tell me how I know if my alternator is an 80 amp or 120 amp?
