Stalling on slow down 900 1992

Only on very hot days, after driving around for awhile, my car almost stalls out when I slow down coming to a stop sign. I've been able to avoid stalling by manually upshifting into 2nd. It does not seem to matter if it's in economy or sport mode. It also happens if I'm driving around in third instead of 4th. I'll be taking it into the shop next Thrusday and I am prepared for the worst. I'd like to keep the car as it is perfect with only 80K miles on it. Any ideas?
