Performance cam... 200

I want to put a performance cam in my 91 245se. the main reason for it, is to gain some power for the big hills my car climbs up when I travel from WI to Cape Cod. When I am going 80, with a luggage, and 2 people, the car will decrease speed about 7-10 MPH until the top of the hill. My main question though is, can I just put the cam in without adjusting the valves, or put it off till a later time? Will it be bad for the car, or just not give me max performance?
