Wow....I just barely limped into work this morning, and really need some advice. Our 92 940GL (159k) has been giving us trouble lately. Mainly lack of performance AND hard starting. What I mean by hard starting is the engine usually turns over first thing in the morning for at least five seconds before she starts. And mostly it takes a second crank to get her going.
A few minutes ago, the engine sputtered and died this morning on the way to work - definitely feels like a fuel problem. The tach did not drop to zero - and I was at a crusing speed at around 35 mph. I was able to sit for a few minutes and restart, and BARELY limp into work. When I could get it started, it seemed to want to run around 2000-2500 rpms, or if I could get the revs up that much. It did not want to run anywhere from idle to 2500 though. It also will not rev any higher than 2500 - feels like fuel starvation. Idling is erratic. I had to do neutral drops to get the car rolling enough to get the two blocks to my parking lot - I had just driven 35 miles in 70 mph traffic.
Anyway, as I replaced the fuel filter a year ago, along with the in-tank pump, I ruled out the fuel filter when looking for a culprit for the hard starting - a mistake?
What I have replaced in the past two weeks were 1) dist. cap and rotor; 2) rpm sensor; 3) fuel pressure regulator
past two months: 1) spark plugs; 2) cleaned the throttle body. Past two years: 1) plug wires; 2) timing belt (maybe 20k on this one).
BTW - since the dist. cap/rotor/rpm sensor/fpregulator - the car has been running extremely well - Much more powerfully. But still hard starting.
I does NOT feel like the engine jumped time. And the fuel pump is working.
Could this be as simple a semi-new fuel filter gone south? I would GREATLY appreciate any guidance you guys could provide. My wife is going to have to bring me some tools/parts from 45 minutes away, and I would love to hit the nail on the head the first time. Best regards and THANKS.
