Major Oil leak on '97 960 HELP 900 1997

My oil change mechanic informed me that I have a major leak up near the crankcase. He said it looked to him that the engine would have to be pulled and a gasket replaced. He's not wanting to do the repairs, he's just letting me know what he sees. I'm not mechanicly inclined, so.....off to the Volvo repair shop I go. Anyone heard of the 960 engines developing major leaks like this....and what can I expect in way of repair bills?

Car has 88k miles on it. Thanks in advance for your help.
