Bonneville Salt Flats - Good News/Bad News

Well the '64 P1800 ran great,--uh, the first time out. Shake-down run for both driver and car, shifted at 5000rpm sounded good, through the 3 mile traps at 4200. Second run, shifting at 6000, the motor started detonating due to lean conditions but couldn't hear the motor talking to me, just down on power and wouldn't pull past 6000 in 3rd gear. Resulted in head that's outa shape by about 0.010" and the #3 piston that suffered edge damage and slight erosion of material. Rings are welded in place at that point of erosion. Slight damage to #4. Convinced that thermal coatings of chambers, valves, and pistons prevented additional damage. Bottom end looks new (it is new). Fuel flow has been fattned up considerably in the ECU. Timing has been backed off a couple degrees. Fuel line geometry has been changed to a complete loop system with pressure regulator downstream of the fuel rail instead of a dead end rail. Will try to get the car back togeter for a short four day event in Oct.

Car got unbelievable attention. Met two P1800 road racers, one from Washington, Terry Erickson, and another from Hawaii (name?). The west coast Volvo engineering tech rep was there. No end of helpful suggestions, comments, and ooogling.

Good news: Two of my daughters came home with three motorcycle records. Have to make a doctors appointment to get their smiles surgically removed.

Two other highlights: Nolan White, 70+ years of age, drove his twin engine chevy streamliner to 422 mph on his recond return run, had his chute rip off, and was heading for hwy 80 about 3 miles away. Burned up his brakes and wheel bearings before ending up in a muddy section, which saved him. He got the record. The other wow item is Mark Lingua, in a 58 cu in streamliner upped his own record by averaging 286 mph with one run at 295+. Almost THREE HUNDRED mph with just FIFTY EIGHT CUBIC INCHES. Incredible. Hopefully better news to come.
