Rear Brake Light Malfunction 700 1988

I have a 1988 740 with approx 58k miles. My light malfunction light recently came on. I have narrowed the malfunction to my right rear brake light. I seems that the light is stuck on the high beam (as if I am applying the brakes). The left side rear brake light is normal (on low setting but goes to high when brakes applied). All other lights work fine. I have tried switching the bulbs, used new bulbs, and switched the bulb sockets - none have stopped the warning light nor the high brake light. Of course the warning light goes off when the lights are switched off. Any thoughts? Thanks.
