24V 6 Good or No Good 900

I am in the market for another Volvo wagon.
Presently I own a 1989 780 with a 5.0 V8 conversion and my wife drives a 1991 940T sedan.
I work on my own cars and have become familiar with the late 80's and early 90's 740s and 940s with the B230FT.
I am now looking for a wagon to use as the houshold work horse (dump runs, hauling a trailer, etc.)
To get to the point. Should I avoid the 24V straight 6 cars. Are some years better than other years. From what I understand, the 24V 6 makes more power than the turbo 4 and should be better suited for towing and hauling.
I don't mind doing the timing belt changes which are required.
What should I lookout for when buying one of these 6 cylinder cars?
