refill tricks for coolant? 200 1989

B230 NA. 350,000 km
This has happened the last three times I drained coolant from the block. I fill via the expansion tank (no other place) and cannot get the proper amount of fluid into the block. I opened the upper rad hose at the rad, but it was full. Net result; I start the engine and run it until it warms up, turn off then wait. After ~5 mins the coolant is sucked into the engine and I can top it up.

I REALLY don't like running the engine with no coolant. Is there a way to bleed air from the engine? What am I missing?
