Dead Instrument Cluster 200 1990

I pulled my instrument cluster the other day to install a large tach with remote clock in place of the large clock. Everything went fine but the idiot lights did not light up when I turned on the ignition. When started, none of the guages worked. I've pulled the cluster and checked the connections, cleaned them, etc. but no luck.

Pin 9 on the round connector is always hot. The remote clock works. There is a yellow wire on the lower right (small spade clip, for shift indicator) of the cluster. A yellow with red stripe wire to the double spade clip on the right of the speedo. Car is a 1990 240DL (no turbo).

I can drive the car and everything else works but of course the alternator will no longer charge the battery. Has anyone experienced this or have any ideas? I badly need the use of the car! Thanks
