B20 Timing Questions after MAJOR backfire-destroyed exhaust 140-160

Guys,
I am having trouble deciding what is the problem at this point. Here is a brief synopsis:
I purchased a 71 142E in perfect original condition.
I pressure washed the engine, and failed to dry the points(I think) and they burned out. It was missing BADLY and I parked it in my garage.
While installing and testing the new points, the engine backfired with incredible force and blew both mufflers wide open. One HELL of a blast, guys.
Anyway, I put some 'flex pipe' on for now and it is quiet enough to drive to the muffler shop.
However, when I checked the timing, it was WAY off. I had to make a BOLD adjustment to get it back. She was sitting at about 40-50 advanced. The book called for 10 degrees BEFORE TDC, the timing is off by 60 degrees or so.
The engine has ZERO power, but does run.
What have I done here? I cannot figure out why it would need any timing adjustment at all. The bolt was NEVER loosened.
Has it jumped a tooth on the timing gears? Have I fixed the timing, but now I have a camshaft not properely aligned? How can I check this?
I am confused.....
