Hey, gotta few questions (1990 740 base sedan).
Front end - I started revamping the front end last weekend (all bushings and ball joints just shot) and ran into a snag. The passenger ball joint came off fine. The ball joint on the driver side has become spiritually one with the control arm. I can't get it off! I've (so far) broken three pullers, (the volvo tool, a 3 jaw, and a pitman arm type) and a fork trying to get the ball joint off. It's not happening. I'm leery of heating it, it's the aluminum type, and have no access to a torch anyway. I also don't have a press to try to press the joint out.
The control arms are aluminum with the AR bar links that require 4 bushings and mount into the arm via a donut shaped appendage.
The way I see it, I have three options,
1. pay Volvo mucho $$$
2. let the car sit while I try to find a matching control arm, which locally has been impossible.
3. change the control arms to the only (earlier) style I can find where the anti-roll bar links are attached to the control arms with a ball joint looking thingy rather than nuts and stuff.
I found a junked '89 780 and '92 940 that would be perfect candidates based on option 3.
Any suggestions? Are the control arms on '87-91 740's interchangable?
I am in heck.
