Cosmetic Repair Question 700 1988

I have a rip in the inside fabric-like covering in the open storage compartment in the dash of my '88 745 (the little tray above the gear shift). A previous owner had glued a piece of velcro on the color matched covering inside the box. I removed the velcro, but, the best I could do, a big patch of the "carpet kind of stuff" came with it. Can anyone give me a thought about what to replace this stuff with. It is very thin, so all I can think of is some kind of contact paper or cork, both of which would look like crap. Anyone have any better ideas? Thanks.
