Button OUT for A/C? 700 1992

I have an 88 745 which has the slide lever to turn on A/C. Test drove a 92 today for a friend and on that car there is a button for A/C. To turn it on you have the button out, to turn A/C off, you push it in. This just seems so counter intuitive. I'm kinda surprised that Volvo would engineer such.

FWIW he did not buy the car. There was enough evidence to show a major accident which bent the car, and sure enough, a CARFAX report shows such.
