Air compressor smoking??? 700 1986

I have a 1986 740 Turbo that is my baby!! I recently had the engine rebuilt and when we got it back the a/c was not working, it appeared that a belt was also very loose, it was the a/c compressor belt. We took it back to the shop and it was reecharged and they also tighted the belt.

today the compressor started squeeling and and making horrible noises and when I opened the hood the actually compressor was smoking a bit and it seemed that the belt and pulley would go around together for awhile and then the compressor pulley seemed to slow down a lot and it was smoking and sparking. I checked the belt and it was EXTREMELY tight. No give at all!! Could this be the problem??

What do I do and what could be wrong. Anyone know a real cheap fix??? I just put over a thousand bucks into it.

Please help. I think because I am a woman the mechanic is trying to make some serious cash from me.
