Things are a bit shifty. 700 1989

I've got an 89' 744ti auto trans and its been driving well, but it seems to shift a little late. I've been playing with the shift cable a bit to remedy the problem, but it still seems a little off. The tranny fluid levels are good, and it transitions between gears very quick. HOwever, the engine revs way too high before it gets to the point of shifting. What are the shift points for an american 740ti aw64 (I think) tranny? What are somethings I shoudl try? About how many rpms should it shift at? I've been told that if the car lurches forward after shifting, that the shift is too late because the car was losing speed. Thank you
