Alternator Problem????? 700

HI
I own a 1987 740 GL. Last night I was driving and my Battery, Park Brake, Brake and Bulb warning lights all came on all of a sudden. It flickered once but remained on constantly. I have checked the wiring behind the alternator and all seems to be okay. I had no other problems with the battery or the alternator it seemed to be charging the battery perfectly. Now the car will not start and I cannot turn on the headlights. Now is it possible that the battery had just died all of a sudden, or that the alternator has died suddenly? I was always under the impression that an alternator gets progressively weaker and weaker before it dies. Can anyone advise me what I should do next??
