How come something always has to break??? 200 1991

ok... so I was cleanging my throttle body, and unhooking all the tubes, and one of the tubes that branches off the from the flame trap snapped off. I know that isn't much of a deal since I can get all new peices for like 3 bucks new. Do I even need a flame trap? How can an engine ever get to the point of back-firing? How come the turbo's don't need the flame trap?
