Lunging Accelaration on Highway. Advice Needed. 200 1992

Went out to dinner with our good friends last night-If your ever in Kennebunkport, you have to try the White Barn Inn, pricey but fabulous, the white glove service is to die for, not to mention the food. Anyways, on the way back to Boston, in my friend's 200 series Volvo, while driving on the highway at speeds of 70-80 mph, the car started to lunge slightly and repeatly, spotty acceleration, maybe a gear was not catching? Only happened on occasion during the drive home. Luckly we all got home without a tow. Is there anything you guys can think of that could be causing this? BTW, my friend just had it serviced too. I think he's got about 113,000 miles on it. Any help would be appreciated.

PS. I usually post in FWD forum as I personally own a 1994 855T-don't hold it against me ;)
