AW 70 Transmission Problems When Cold 700

My 1988 n/a 740 with an AW70 automatic has about 40,000 miles on its current rebuild. In the last few days, it has gotten EXTREMELY sluggish when I first crank it up and try to drive it in the morning, or when it's been sitting anywhere for more than a few hours. Once it gets warmed up (less than 5 minutes) it shifts beautifully, but for that initial period, it just about will not shift, particularly from first to second gear. At that point, the car really drives exactly the way it does when the gear selector is in "1." I've checked the fluid level, and it's fine, and the fluid doesn't appear to have any unusual color or odor to me. It is almost due for its 20,000 mile service, including fluid and filter change, and this might help, but I really don't want to waste the time and money if the tranny is just going to wind up in a landfill soon anyway. So, what do you think? Normal symptoms of a dirty fluid/filter combination, or is it time to go looking for a new transmission?
