volvo 360 glt transmission fault 1985

i have a volvo 360 glt 2 litre. when i try to put it in gear i have to force the gear lever as far back as possible to get it into 2nd or 4th even then it feels like it has only just gone into gear it's the same for 1st 3rd and 5th. this has not been a gradual problem it happened virtually overnight.the clutch pedal feels no different, i've been told it could be the gear linkage. is this true and is it possible to do it myself? if not is it an expensive job in a garage?
