What are the functions of the PNP Switch? 900

I recently had my arrow/"E"/"W" lights start flashing (while the shifter and tranny seems to work fine otherwise), and it was suggested that it is my PNP (Gear Position Sensor) switch.

My question is:

What different things does the PNP switch do? (Or what can it screw up?)

I know from postings that it can prevent the car from starting in any gear as well as prevent the shift lever from being moved w/out pressing the manual override button, and evidently control the reverse light, but for future reference, what OTHER things does it control?

I am in the process of obtaining manuals for the car, but until then the knowledge would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob
