cant get universal joint off of steering gear 200 1987

I'm pulling the rack and pinion off of a dono 1987 240 and everything is going ok until I get to the universal on the bottom of the steering shaft.Pulled both nuts and bolts out, have spread the"pinch"joints, and pryed on the stub sticking thru the joint(from the rack).Spent the afternoon getting nowhere but frustrated, and the damn blowtorch is calling my name!Seeems like there oughta be an easier way,or,as usual,is there some blatently apparent solution that is painfully obvious to everyone but me?Thanks for any help.Pulling out the steering column seems to be the only option! Pottzie
