brighter tail lights? 200

Is there any way to brighten up the tail lights on my 78 242?
I've polished up the plastic lenses to like new condition, but the
bulbs are too dim. Will I hurt anything by upgrading to a highter
wattage bulb? Can the fuse handle a little more wattage?
