Longevity of auto trans 700

The transmissions are robust and last a long time. If the car sat in traffic, then 48k on the rear end is about 248k on the engine and tranny, but you can confirm this through other means (wear on the brake pedal cover, seats cracked, etc.)

Your best bet is a used tranny from a low-mileage wreck, or a rebuild at a local tranny shop in NZ. Parts and labor for a rebuild in the US would be about US$900.
