How to check the pre-pump and other ?'s 200 1992

My car has had off idle hesitation under a load and intermittent idle fluctuations. The other day I noticed the main pump was noisy (fly against a window sound) which is also intermittent. I looked at the prepump access hole and see a large, small, hose, and a capped nipple. Which should I use to place a hose over to see if prepump is pumping? Also, which pump pressurizes the system when the key is on before start. I can hear this also. If this prepump turns out to be inop, which brand should I look for? Is a special tool required to remove this pump as hanynes illustrates? Thanks.
