Smell Gas While Brick Idles?????? 700 1989

When brick is stuck in traffic and AC is running I can smell fuel, I push in the recirculation button which helps for a while. When I exit the car after a short/LONG drive I can still smell gas fumes. But when the AC is off I don't smell a thing. Any suggestions from you guys out there. What could be wrong?
