'Intank fuel pump' / 'fuel pump relay' 200

I told a Volvo mechanic about my problem (randomly stalling) and told him about the fuel pump relay possibility. I also told him that the relay becomes kind of hot after driving for a while. He said that it's very possible that the "intank fuel pump" is not working and that the main pump has to work overtime.

Q: How can I make sure that the "intank fuel pump" is not working correctly and how much is it (approx.) to have it fixed?
Or do all fuel pump relays become hot?
Thanks,
Pieter
