success replacing M47 bearings?

I have an M47 transmission that has recently (past month) begun to growl in 5th gear. The noise is nowhere near that of another M47 equipped 740 that I test drove, but is still noticeable.

I have read the 700 FAQ on the M47 that suggests that the bearing play soon begins to wear down the gears. Has anybody had any success recplacing only the bearings of an M47? The alternative is to purchase another m47 from an auto recycler, which is a bit of a gamble in itself. I have also looked into purchasing an m90 tranmission, but they are price pohibitive.
