OPENING AT TRUNK ON A 87 200 200 1987

I need to see if anyone has been able to open a trunk on a 200 series after the lock a malfunctioned. I can see it through the "ski portal" but don't know what would actually open the latch. I suspect that rod has come off from the latch, but need to get it open in order to make a diagnosis and repair.
I have consisderd TNT, but with all the terror alerts, that stuff might be hard to find and cause long and tiresome interviews with federal agancies. Fire crackers are banned in Colorado, so I guess I better try a more reasonable meathod. There must be away. Thanks.
