Black smoke, rough idle, crappy MPG 200 1987

Okay everybody. My 244 developed a poor idle this week, but was running ok at highway speeds. Now I the way home today, I watched as it was sucking gas like crazy. I stopped buy the store bought some vacuum lines and changed the ones that I thought were needed. Got some new plugs cause I noticed the ones on there are "black velvet" all the way.(havent put them in, engines still too hot) Anyway, after I changed the lines,(one to the Fuel Pressurer Regulator, and the other was just a little 90 degree bend that runs from the intake manifold to a big black box right by the winshield washer rez.) Sorry tried to find out what it was called in the manual I didnt see anything. When I had the car running to see if the idle improved, its still alittle rough. I notice some black smoke coming from the exhaust, when I gave it some gas the smoke really started pumping out.
Whats the matter with my baby???
Thanx Patrick
