92-956-Blew My Rear Seal??-LONG! 900 1992

Coming back from vaca in upstate new york with the beast fully loaded-wife-three dogs and all the vaca stuff, and I an cooking (70 - 90) through the wonderful back roads for a good four hours when I turn onto the start of the PA turnpike.

Pulling out of the the toll booth I smell something not quite right and pull over about a 1/4 mile down the highway. Open the door and black wisps of smoke are wafting up from under the car. Pop the hood-a bit of smoke from rear of the motor but nothing else. Look back under the car with a flashlight and see drips. Pull car ahead 10 feet and see an oil puddle. Maybe 5-6 tablespoons. Pull dipstick-dry!

Walk to the "Emergency roadside assistance phone". Inside, 4 buttons-red=police, yellow=medical, black=towtruck, white = other. "Press button and then wait up to 30 minutes for asistanced to arrive". Right!

Back in the car to drive to the next exit or until the check oil light comes on. Exit 6 miles later and pull into the local shop in .2 miles. up on the lift in a jiffy and oild is all over the trans andf oil pan. "You blew the rear seal." ....After a bit of techncial analysis we decide to top it off. Took two quarts, and drive it home (another 150 miles down the road) easy, hoping it was all just blowby due to my aggressive driving with a full load etc. etc.

Which we did without a problem. Dipstick check at home showed no loss of oil after topping it off. I plan on looking at the flame trap tomorrow (I did notice some oil staining th rear cam plug) What else should I be worried about or do. The motor has 165K and I'm shooting for 250K as a minimum!

Thanks.
