all of a sudden stop! 700 1989

Hi there!
Does anyone have any idea of why my '89 745GL's engine would stop just cruising down the highway? It happened again yesterday plugging down the freeway and it started to cut out, I pulled over, and by the time I came to a stop, the engine had died. I tried to start it right away, but it wouldn't. It would crank but no go. I waited about five to ten minutes, tried it again, and it started right up. The "check engine" idiot light is on now, but seems to be running fine. This has also happened to my son and wife on a couple of occasions. The car has approx. 150k miles. I keep it tuned and oil changed every 3k, and she has been just fine up to this all of a sudden stopping. My wife and son also have had to wait a few minutes before they can re-start. Thanks in advance....
