Frustration is mounting!! 700 1986

Hello everybody!
I just replaced my wiring harness, turbo intake hose, and cleaned tons of grime off the engine of my "new" 86 745ti with 334,000. I got the car for a whopping $300 because it has an "r" title. The car is in very good shape since it was reconditioned, but the darn thing is very difficult to start. First, the battery will not charge, and the voltmeter on the dash shows no movement. I have to jump it every time I try to start it. I pulled the brushes out of the alternator and they look fine. Any suggestions? Second, I have to try many times before the engine will finally start, and then I have to feather the gas for a minute until the engine will idle on its own. The fuel pressure regulator looks as if it was never replaced. I hear the click of the fuel pump, so I know that works, and once warmed up, the car runs strong. Any help is greatly appreciated.
