I think this is a bad idea. The timing mark can't be trusted. Too many times I have seen busted harmonic balancers and wild timing. The best, foolproof method is to take #1 spark plug out and stick your finger in the hole and turn the crank by hand. You will feel the compression stroke because the air will all puff out around your finger as opposed to going out the exhaust valve. When the air is all puffed out is when you're at TDC. The feeler method alone is no good because you cannot tell the difference between TDC and the beginning of the intake stroke (the piston comes to the top 2 times in the 4-cycle engine, but only one time is it TDC). So if all you did was make sure the piston was at the top of the stroke you only have a 50% chance that you installed the flywheel correctly, assuming you have the marks on the flywheel lined up right.
