From the model year 1965 and up to 1969 the seats in the Volvo Amazon are prepared for head rests, which was an extra option during these years (probably standard on the export cars to the US and Canada). The 1970 Volvo Amazon had factory installed head rests. Volvo were still kinda fuzzy with their model years in 1965, but it is the seats that have their upholstery entirely in vinyl that are prepared for head rests.
You need the head rests with the right upholstery (color) and the guidance sleeves before you begin. The Amazon head rests were also used in the 140-series 1970-1971, in the P1800 and possibly (can anyone confirm this?) in early models of the 164. You're best off trying to take them from one of these cars on a junk yard - doesn't have to be a color match as the upholstery is relatively inexpensive to buy new. Just buy two seats with the head rests and bring it all home. I bought mine for like €40 for the pair plus another €40 for the upholstery.
Practice on the seats you bought and carefully remove the guidance sleeves from the seats and put them in your Amazon seats instead. Once in place, you can cut out the holes needed in the seats. Removing the upholstery from the seats is a bit tricky and requires some patience. The result is nice and - above all - safe!
I think Nordicar (www.nordicar.com) sells head rests "new", but they are so expensive that it is almost ridiculous (like €200 a piece).
