Help OD Problem - wife says car must go (she wants to go back to volkswagen!) 900

(940Turbo 2.3i 91 M46 +OD)

Driving home tonight from my daughters 1st birthday outing to the zoo I was doing 60 mph in OD when the OD suddenly dropped out, light still on etc, but deffinately changed down to 4th on its own! Now it refuses to come back!

I have looked at the FAQ and deduced several possibles, I have taken the relay out and resoldered it (even though it looked fine) I note its not a bosch unit but a heller and is different in apperance to the one in FAQ. Still no OD.

Now the problem I have is that i dont have anywhere to work on the bottom of the car..so I got to borrow somewhere so its got to be a quick fix...and if it take s too long no more volvo's....says the wife (and its her car).

Other than trolling thru the stuff in the FAQ does anyone have any suggestions from the suddenness of the failure, and the way its staying failed.

A couple of other bits of info: - i can hear the relay changing over, i have the beginings of a sticky gearbox in 1st/2nd.

the car has 134k,
