EGR leaks 200

My 82 244GL has the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system with a metal pipe leading off from the rear of the exhaust manifold to what looks like a vacuum operated valve by the CIS fuel distributor. The metal pipe is rusted thru near its screwed connection to the manifold. What can be done to fix this (besides the obvious replacement of the pipe)? Would it hurt any to remove it and plug the entry? How would that affect perfomance? Are there other steps to removing the EGR if it's even an option here? Comments, please from those most wise.... (and others too with knowledge of this!)
