93 960 Crankshaft Endplay / Rear Main Seal 900

My 93 960 is in for rear main seal. The mechanic call me in and showed me the the crankshaft has endplay (at least 1/32") suffiecnet to casue the flywhell to hit the back of the block where it is slowly wearing shallow grooves. Has anyone experiecned this? Can the thrust washers be relaced and if so is the rest of the bottom already compromised?
